Treatment for Medically Complex Autism
Individuals with medically complex autism are often non-verbal making it difficult for parents and physicians to recognize symptoms of medical conditions. Left untreated, these conditions can lead to self-injurious (self-mutilation) and violently aggressive behaviors often secondary to unidentified sources of pain.
These conditions can include:
Gastrointestinal Disorders
Seizure Disorders
Polypharmacy (medication cocktails)
Sleep Disorders
Metabolic Disorders
Food Allergies
Asthma/Eczema
Seasonal Allergies
Pain of Unknown Origin
Aggressive behavior can result in:
unnecessary pharmaceutical treatment
traumatic emergency room visits
missed school and therapy
physical restraints in school
caregivers being seriously injured in the home
ineffective behavioral intervention
admission to psychiatric hospitals where sedation, rather than medical treatment, is the standard of care

The Consultation
After an initial screening to determine eligibility, five Autism Think Tank medical specialists are selected to consult in the videoconference. Our specialists share their expertise and resources with the individual’s parents and their participating physician and collectively develop a comprehensive plan of care based on the latest evidenced based best practices.
Prior to the consultation, the Autism Think Tank experts review all medical records, videos, IEPs, therapy, and behavior reports, while also considering the psychosocial effects of the circumstances on the entire family.
The Autism Think Tank does not provide direct patient care. Rather, during this 60-minute telehealth consultation, one cohesive plan of care is created to be carried out with the family’s local specialists and is guided by their participating physician.
Following an Autism Think Tank Telehealth Consultation, a comprehensive report and case management are provided to support the family and participating physician who helps to coordinate with local specialists to carry out the suggested plan of care.
